The Jazz performer Nancy Wilson a three-time Grammy Award-winner was born on February 20, 1937, in Chillicothe Ohio to iron-worker Olden Wilson and the former Lillian Ryan who worked as a housekeeper. Nancy was one of six kids. Nancy was extremely influenced when she was a young girl by the music her father played and loved when she was at her home. As a young girl she was already able to establish an idea of who she was as well as what she wanted to do. Church choirs helped develop this talent. In high school her appearances in Skyline Melodies. The same year, Nancy began to perform at nightclubs. Nancy was just 17 when she graduated highschool. After matriculating at Ohio Central State College - which is now Central State University - for one term, Nancy quit to become a professional performer. She recorded her first record in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956. The group performed from 1956 until 1958. As part of the group, Nancy recorded her first album with Dot Records. Cannonball Aderley suggested she move in New York so as to enhance her career. In 1959, Nancy moved to The Big Town. Within one month, she got an offer to sing in The Blue Morocco Night Club on Boston Road in The Bronx where Adderley's agent heard her, and she was signed. In 1960, he enlisted her to Capitol Records and in that same year she released her first single. Guess Who Saw Today. Capitol Records issued five Nancy Wilson albums over a period of two years. Following the influence of Adderley, Nancy Wilson shifted her focus from R&B into jazz. Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley as well as their 1962 partnership made her a star. Her breakthrough hit Tell Me the Truth by 1963. It was this performance that helped her land a gig at New York Coconut Grove in 1963. It was the most crowded in America's nightclub.
