Nancy Wilson is a Grammy Award winner in jazz. She was born the 20th of February, 1937 in Chillicothe OH to Olden Wilson, who was employed at the ironworks as well as Lillian Ryan, a former domestic employee. Nancy was the youngest of six children. Nancy was inspired by her father's musical tastes as well as the music played at her family home. When she was four, Nancy was aware that she wanted to be a musician. She developed her musical talent through participating in choirs of the church. After winning a talent competition on television when she was 15, she started to regularly appear in Skyline Melodies, while still in high school. The singer began performing in nightclubs at the similar age. Nancy was 17 when she graduated from high-school and matriculated at Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for an entire year prior to deciding to sing. In 1956, she recorded her debut record in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band with whom she toured from 1956 until 1958. While in the group Nancy made her first recording with Dot Records. Cannonball Adderley urged her to move into New York in order to increase her fame. She visited The Big Town, New York in the year 1959. Within a month she got an offer to sing in The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road in The Bronx where Adderley's agent heard her and signed her. He obtained a contract for signing her with Capitol records in 1960 and she made her debut that year by releasing the single. Guess Who I Saw Today. Capitol released five Nancy Wilson albums within two years. Adderley encouraged her to shift away from R&B in favor of music that was more jazz-based and torch songs. Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley together with their 1962 group led her to the top of the charts. She had her breakthrough song Tell Me the Truth by 1963. In the following year, she received an invitation to perform in New York's Coconut Grove, the most prestigious club in America.
