Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, is an American artist and rapper. Her performance as a singer, music, film and TV artist has garnered the actress two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also won an Grammy Award along with six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah's parents are Lancelot and Rita Owens. Both were Police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who was a teacher the class at Irvington High School. The couple divorced when Latifah was age of 10. Latifah was raised in the Baptist church, and attended Catholic schools in Newark New Jersey. Latifah refers to gentle and kind. Her cousin gave it to her at the age of aged eight. Always a tall girl the 5'10 tall Latifah was a power forward on her high school basketball team. She performed the number"Home" from the musical The Wiz in a high school production. Latifah was the first to begin beatboxing for Ladies Fresh. Latifah was one of the founding members of the model of the Flavor Unit which at that time consisted of MCs grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a demo of Queen Latifah her rap Princess of the Posse. He handed the recording over to Yo! MTV Raps which is hosted by Freddy. The single caught the eye to Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who has signed Latifah and released her first single Wrath of My Madness.
